Kuusamo ARK started a multi-year art program partnership with the world's northernmost electronic music and modern art festival, Solstice. The festival takes place on Midsummer's Day at the top of Ruka.

In the spring of 2022, Kuusamo ARK together with the festival opened a call for an artist residency collaboration, seeking an artist to make a work for the festival.

Visual artist Timo Vaittinen was selected as the curated artist-in-residence through an open search.

Timo Vaittinen is a visual artist from Helsinki who uses different tools and materials in his expression. His works have been exhibited in prominent venues in recent years, e.g. at the Porvoo Triennale, Turku Art Museum, and Riga Bourse Museum of Contemporary Art.

Vaittinen started his residency work at the beginning of June and the final piece was seen at the Midsummer Festival. A wind chanter that resembles a sound system, made of recycled materials, plays in the mountain wind at the top of Ruka for the duration of the summer.
