Alina & Elisa Sakko

In April, sisters Alina and Elisa Sakko will be working at a residency where they are developing a contemporary dance and installation art piece called "made of soft, muscular material". They began working on the project a year ago in the spring, and it will premiere at the Resolution contemporary dance festival in London on June 1, 2023.

Alina Sakko, a dance artist, is the choreographer and performer of the piece. She has previously worked as a classical ballet dancer at the Finnish National Ballet and has since trained at the London Contemporary Dance School. Her work aims to make contemporary dance more accessible to audiences, using familiar elements like pop music and everyday themes to create a bodily empathetic experience. Alina is also part of the MOŸ MOŸ collective, which is focused on artistic cooperation and support.

Elisa Sakko, a visual artist, is the work partner and interlocutor for "made of soft, muscular material". She contributes to the themes of the piece through visual elements, using found and obtained materials to deconstruct and assemble her work. Elisa is interested in the active functionality of materials and primarily works with sculpture and installation in Turku.

"made of soft, muscular material" explores the themes of taking over and giving space to the female body, being heard, and listening. The twenty-minute piece is set to music by electronic rap and punk artist Laua Rip.

This is the first time the Sakko sisters have worked together on a stage art project, and their collaboration has been fruitful. Following the premiere, they plan to continue developing the project by exploring different avenues for sharing their artistic work.
